Samurai Jack is an American action-adventure animated television series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network.

Premise

The show tells the story of a young prince from a feudal Japan-inspired setting, whose father received a magic katana used to defeat and imprison the supernatural shape-shifting demon Aku. Eight years later, Aku escapes, and the Emperor sends away his son to travel the world and train so he can return and use the magic sword to defeat Aku, whom he faces and almost defeats upon his return. But Aku creates a time portal that sends the prince turned samurai into the distant future, with anticipation that he would be able to deal with the samurai by that time.

Arriving in a dystopian retrofuturistic Earth ruled by Aku and eventually adopting the name of Jack (his given name is never mentioned), the prince must overcome various obstacles in his quest to travel back to his own time and defeat Aku. But for every time he gets near to finishing his quest, Jack's chance slips and he must forcibly continue his journey.

Why It Was Cancelled

Cartoon Network was going through transitions, and Tartakovsky, not wanting to rush in finishing the story as there was no time to think about it at the time and because of his involvement in creating Star Wars: Clone Wars, decided to leave the show where it was, which ultimately left it open-ended.

Revival

A fifth and final season was made to conclude the story and aired on Adult Swim on March 11, 2017, thirteen years after the fourth season concluded.
