Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks is an American mystery drama television series created by Mark Frost and David Lynch.

Premise

The series follows an investigation headed by FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer. The narrative draws on elements of crime drama, but its uncanny tone, supernatural elements, and campy, melodramatic portrayal of eccentric characters also draw on American soap opera and horror tropes.

Why It Was Cancelled

Public interest began to wane with the resolution of the show's main drawing point (Laura Palmer's murder) in the middle of the second season, and with subsequent story lines becoming more obscure and drawn out. This discontent, coupled with ABC changing its timeslot on a number of occasions, led to a huge drop in the show's ratings after being one of the most-watched television programs in the United States in 1990. A week after the season's 15th episode placed 85th in the ratings of 89 shows, ABC put the show on an indefinite hiatus, a move that usually moved to cancellation.

The series was briefly continued with a theatrical film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, released in 1992. The film, which serves as a prequel to the series, was poorly received upon its initial release but has gained a much more favorable reception over the years.

Revival

On October 6, 2014, it was announced that a limited series would air on showtime, with Frost and Lynch writing all of the episodes and the former directing. This new season, also known as Twin Peaks: The Return, serves a continuation set in the present day, with the passage of 25 years being an important element in the plot. The season premiered on May 21, 2017.
